Clutch Hitting Leads Mustangs To Victory Over Loyola In CIF SS Championships Wild Card Rd

CIFSS The Mustangs trailed the Loyola Cubs 4-2 heading into the bottom of the 6th inning in yesterday’s (May 15) wild card round game of the CIF SS Championships. Heading out of the 6th inning, the Mustangs pulled even with Loyola 4-4 thanks to Trevor Petersen’s two-run clutch hit.

Loyola failed to score in the top of the 7th inning, setting up a dramatic Mustangs finish. Ben DePerry led off the inning taking four straight pitches for a walk. Adam Vargas followed by drilling an 0-1 pitch to right field for a double. With runners on second and third, Sean McCarrell belted an 0-1 fastball to straight away center field for a clean hit … and the game winning run. An injury-free dog pile on top of McCarrell quickly ensued as the Mustangs defeated Loyola 5-4 in walk-off fashion.

The Mustangs travel 156 miles up the California coastline to Goleta on Thursday, May 17, for their first round matchup against  Channel League champions Dos Pueblos HS. Go Mustangs!
